So you only have about two minutes, but you want to craft a fine drink you can throw back and enjoy? Instead of whipping up just anything, you can shake up a snake bite shot, courtesy of recipe developer Christina Musgrave of Tasting with Tina.

According to Cocktails with Class, it is known as a snake bite shot simply because it’s sneakily strong. In the UK, a snakebite drink is an alcoholic beverage that typically consists of equal parts apple cider and beer. Just because it’s a shot, does not mean you have to throw this drink back in one gulp. “This shot is strong, so make this for a party occasion,” Musgrave says, adding that “A bachelorette or bachelor party would be perfect.” Despite the strength of Yukon Jack liqueur, the sweetness of the lime cordial balances things out make this drink one you can slowly sip and enjoy.

To prepare this classic snake bite shot, you’ll need Yukon Jack liqueur, and lime cordial or sweetened lime juice. It’s more tart than a sweet syrup, but less bitter than lime juice alone.  Yukon Jack is something of a confounding beverage, but we mean that in the best possible way. See, it’s technically a liqueur, but liqueurs are usually lower in alcohol than liquors. And at 100 proof, though, Yukon Jack is quite a bit more potent. Made with honey, this is a booze made with strong Canadian whiskey, which tends to be on the sweet side, resulting is a drink that’s both tasty but also potent. It’s like nothing else, really, and that’s a beautiful thing.

Either way, don’t try to dress it up too much since, as Musgrave says: “This is best simple so the garnishes don’t get in the way when you take the shot.”

Shake and enjoy

Fill a cocktail shaker with a generous amount of ice, then add the Yukon Jack and lime cordial. Close the shaker, shake it for at least 15 seconds, and strain into a glass. All you have to do now is serve and enjoy this classic snake bite shot. Also, note that you can make a large serving in advance. Musgrave says that “You can definitely make a big batch. Just make big batches of the recipe and chill [it] in the refrigerator before serving. Give it a shake before serving to make sure the shot isn’t separated.”
