With Covid-19 continuing to force strict social distancing and mask requirements across the country, questions have been swirling about the logistics of the upcoming ski season. One of the most-discussed topics involved the issue of whether or not resorts would require reservations for lift access. Epic Pass was the first to make a move, announcing that reservations would be required at their destinations––with Epic Pass holders receiving exclusive benefits including early season access and priority reservation days. However, the potential scenario of being locked out during perfect powder days has made some people apprehensive about the plan. The folks at Ikon Pass just made clear they’re taking a different approach.

Ikon announced no reservations will be required for lift access at the majority of their 38 North American destinations for winter 20/21. Of course, with the unprecedented and rapidly evolving nature of a pandemic––Ikon’s plan is subject to change. But as of right now, most Ikon destinations will forego reservation requirements and instead deploy plans to “address social distancing concerns through other operational changes.” One of these key changes will involve temporarily regulating or eliminating day passes in order to avoid overcrowding and give priority access to Ikon Pass holders. In addition, all guests are encouraged to check in with each destination to learn more about face covering requirements, social distancing, and disinfection protocols that might impact their visit.

With opening day for many ski resorts less than two months away, anticipation is rising as both skiers and snowboarders are itching to return to the slopes. But in what promises to be an unpredictable season, the two largest multi-resort passes are taking opposing strategies to managing social distancing guidelines. Which one will work out best?
